There was a legend in the southern and northern dynasties. A goatherd found an interesting phenomenon that Ram was in many oestrus times after eating a kind of grass, erected hard, time extending and “make love” with ewe for many times .
Tao Hongjing, the famous physician of traditional Chinese medicine and naturalist in that time, made a field visit after listening the story. He thought the herb did had an effect on tonifying Yang and enhance the sex of the goat. Therefore, he included it in his monograph Collective Notes to Canon of Materia Medica and named the herb as horny goat weed/epimedium. Afterwards, horny goat weed becomes one of the commonly used herbs to tonify kidney and Yang for man.
Nowadays, studies have proved that horny goat weed has some active ingredients such as icariin, etc. And the ingredient does effects on supplementing male sex hormone and increasing vasodilatation. Besides, icariin can improve function of erection, sexual desire and erected extending, which becomes one of natural remedies.
